- He was called to the Indian national test cricket squad for the series against New Zealand in 2003-04. Chopra was the opening partner of his Delhi teammate Virender Sehwag.
- In the second test match of his debut series against New Zealand, he scored two half centuries.
- During the tour of Australia in 2003-04, Chopra proved his will after building two-century partnerships with his opening mate.
- Up next was the tour of Pakistan, where he compiled another opening century stand which helped India post more than 600 runs in the first innings of the first test against arch-rivals. He, however, did not perform well in the second test and was dropped for the following match.
- It was in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2004 that he got to play for India once again. Tendulkar’s ousting was the reason Chopra was named in the squad against Australia. A heavy loss in the match and the return of Tendulkar resulted in Chopra being thrown out of the team. He was again called to play Australia in the third Test of the series. The second failure was the final departure of Chopra from the Indian cricket team.
- Chopra has played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 1st and 2nd season of Indian Primer League.
- In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2008, he played for Delhi and scored 425 runs in 7 innings at an average of 60.71. He ranked third in the highest scoring players in the tournament that year.
- After playing for Delhi throughout his career, he moved to the Rajasthan team as a guest player and helped them win their first Ranji Trophy in the 2010-11 season and the other one in the 2011-12 season. He holds a record of three Ranji Trophies under his belt, one for Delhi and two for Rajasthan, and is also one of the few Indian players to score 10,000 first-class runs.
- In 2012, he was signed by the Rajasthan Royals for the 4th edition of Indian Premier League.
