- Hailing from a small village in Kannur district, Kerala, Byju Raveendran attended a Malayalam-medium school, where both his parents were teachers.
- In an interview, he said that although his parents were teachers, they never pressurised him to perform well at academics. Instead, his father pushed him more towards sports, which resulted in him playing six different sports at the university level, including Football, Cricket, Table Tennis and Badminton.
- Despite being an avid sportsperson, Byju never had a plan to a pursue a career in the same. Like most of the other students at his school, he could think of only two professions- medical science (Doctor) and engineering. Since, as a medical student, he would have got hardly any time to play, he chose to become an engineer.
- After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering, he secured a job as a ‘service engineer’ at a multi-national shipping firm.
- Things, however, completely took a turn when he was on a vacation to Bangalore. There, he had many friends who were preparing for the CAT exam. Since Byju was good at maths, his friends asked him to help them prepare. Not only did he aid his friends with the subject, but he himself appeared for the exam just for “fun.” To his surprise, he scored a perfect 100 percentile, and to add icing on the cake, most of his friends cleared the exam as well.
- Nevertheless, he didn’t enroll in any of the IIM’s as he had no desire to pursue MBA. Through positive word of mouth, the friends of his friends, who cleared the exam, came to know about him. Thus, his journey of becoming a professional teacher began from the terrace of a friend’s house, where he would teach MBA aspirants the tips and tricks to solve maths (aptitude) problems in the least time-consuming way. In his own words, “As the number of students grew, the venue moved from the terrace of a friend’s house to a classroom, and then to an auditorium.”
- Since he was enjoying this, he gave up his job and began teaching. He kept the initial workshops ‘free of cost’ and charged money only for the advanced workshops once the students were comfortable with his style of teaching.
- He became so popular among students that at one point in time, he was taking maths workshops for around 20,000 students, across different cities, including Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Chennai.
- In the year 2009, he began recording his own lectures so as to make them available to students across 45 cities that he could not travel to.
- After passing out of IIM’s, a few of his students contacted him and shared the idea of taking Byju’s classes to an all new domain. Therefore, he, along with his former students, founded a company, named “Think and Learn” that aimed at creating content for school students. Byju has the notion that to perform well in competitive exams, students should have complete concept-clarity that can only be imparted during a person’s schooling.
- By August 2015, Byju’s Android and iOS mobile apps had over 5.5 million downloads with 2,50,000+ annual subscriptions.
- In September 2016, Chan-Zuckerberg initiative, the philanthropic organisation created by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, invested a whopping $50 million in Byju’s firm.
- The following snapshot sums up Byju’s journey:

- In 2017, Byju’s- The Learning App was incorporated by the “Harvard University” as one of its case studies.
