- In 1961, he joined the Carlton Club in Coburg where his father used to play.
- He hit 19,188 runs including 55 centuries, 88 half-centuries and scored 324 runs not out (average of 51.85) in first-class matches.
- From 1984 to 1992, he played 52 test matches for Australia where he scored 3,631 runs with 11 centuries, at an average of 46.55.
