  • Swapan was born in Calcutta in a Bengali Vaidya family.
  • He belongs to a well-renowned family as his grandfather K.C. Das was a Bengali entrepreneur and proprietor of the Calcutta Chemical Company, father S.C. Dasgupta was the owner and Chairman of the Calcutta Chemical Company, and mother Rekha was the daughter of the successful solicitor Susil Chandra Sen.
  • Swapan did his Bachelors of Arts degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi in 1975, specialising in History.
  • He then went abroad to pursue his masters and doctorate degree from School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
  • His father’s death in 1979 prompted him to return to India and join the Calcutta Chemical Company, which was headed by his father earlier.
  • He lost his interest in business and left India again and chose to work as Junior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford. His excellent work at the college awarded him INLAKS scholarship by the INLAKS-Shivdasani Foundation.
  • In 1986, he came to India with a mindset of settling his career in journalism, and started his work with an Indian English-language broadsheet daily newspaper titled “The Statesman.”
