- He was born to Felice Fo and Pina Rota Fo in Lombardy’s Province of Varese, Italy.
- His father was a station master for the Italian State Railway.
- His mother was also a writer.
- His sister, Bianca Fo Garambois, was a writer and his younger brother, Fulvio Fo, became a theater administrator.
- His family had to frequently move along with Swiss-border as his father’s post was transferred frequently.
- He learned about storytelling from his grandmother, glassblowers and Lombard fishers.
- He moved to Milan in 1940 to study at the Brera Academy.
- During the World War II, he joined Mussolini’s Fascist Army- Repubblica Sociale Italiana to help his father to smuggle Allied soldiers, refugees and Jewish Scientists in disguise.
- After the end of the Second World War, he returned to Milan to further his studies in architecture at the Brera Academy.
- He had to abandon a thesis on Roman Architecture after the Second World War.
- In an interview, he revealed that his artistic influences include- Anton Chekhov, G B Shaw, De Filippo, Brecht, Beolco, Strehler, Mayakovosky, Gramsci and Molière.
- He had been hailed worldwide by the critics for his acting abilities, leftist ideologies and satirical works.
- He was an unexpected winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature.
- Most of his plays has been translated into more than 30 different languages worldwide.
