- He was born in Paris and obtained his PhD from the Université Louis-Pasteur, Strasbourg, Alsace, France.
- He did his PhD under the guidance of J. M. Lehn, who was also awarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in the year 1987.
- He made a significant contribution to the 1st syntheses of the cryptand ligands during his PhD work.
- He did his postdoctoral research with M. L. H. Green.

- On October 5, 2016, he was awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L. Feringa for their design and production of Molecular Machines. They have developed molecules with controllable movements and these molecules can perform a task when energy is added.
