- He was born as Newton Leroy McPherson at the Harrisburg hospital in Pennsylvania.
- His father was 19 and his mother was 16 when they married in September 1942.
- Soon after the marriage, his parents separated and his mother married to an Army Officer Robert Gingrich who adopted Newt as his son.
- He was raised mostly in Hummelstown and on military bases where his adopted father Robert Gingrich was stationed.
- During his junior year in high school in 1960, he moved to Georgia at Fort Benning along with his family.
- He developed interest in politics since his teen years and also visited the site of the Battle of Verdun to learn the sacrifice and importance of political leadership.
- In 1985, he regretted his decision not to serve in the military.
