  • He was born at the end of World War II in Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu in Japan.
  • Initially he was interested in Chemistry and later he switched his focus to Molecular Biology.
  • He is the youngest of 4 brothers.
  • In 1974, he received his PhD from the University of Tokyo.
  • Before coming back to Japan in the late 1980s, he spent several years at the Rockefeller University in New York.
  • Ohsumi is considered as the 1st scientist to define cell recycling.
  • On October 3, 2016, he became the 25th Japanese to receive a Nobel Prize and the 4th in the Medicine category.
  • The main focus of his work is on how cells break down and recycle their content termed as- autophagy (self-eating).
